Generous support for Museum de Fundatie

16-07-2024 - In 2024 and 2025, Museum de Fundatie will thus receive 900,000 euros of additional support per year from the Zwolle municipality and Overijssel province combined.

"We are delighted with the support and confidence of the municipality and province. Both the province of Overijssel and the municipality of Zwolle have pledged additional financial support to give Museum de Fundatie the chance to put its house in order.

Since 2023, we have shown with the team, that we have changed tack. That takes time and money. We are increasingly a meeting place for different generations and, together with other cultural institutions, a booster for creativity in the province and a stage for talent development. We feel encouraged to continue along this chosen path with solid financial backing and will do everything possible to keep the financial basis in order."

Joint support

In December, the museum sounded the alarm. Partly due to cost increases and disappointing visitor numbers, the museum could no longer make up the resulting deficits from its own reserves. The municipality and province joined forces and commissioned independent consultancy Berenschot to investigate the museum's financial housekeeping. The results of the study confirmed the need for additional support. On 26 June last, the Provincial Council took the positive decision, and this evening the Zwolle city council also agreed to a decision for extra support.

Financial injection

In 2024 and 2025, Museum de Fundatie will thus receive €900,000 per year in extra support from the Zwolle city council and the province of Overijssel together. This amount has been granted for two years, with the condition that the museum comes up with an improvement plan in the spring of 2025. On the basis of a reassessed policy plan for the period 2026 - 2028, the province and municipality will decide on subsidy provision until the next multi-year policy plan period.

In the meantime, the museum is working hard to improve its exploitation, control costs, provide a high-quality programme of exhibitions and activities, and raise more public and private funds and supporters. With the crowd puller Marianne von Werefkin - Pioneer of Expressionism, the museum hopes to boost visitor numbers this autumn.
