Pixel Waves

a façade in motion

From 10 to 14 December, the neoclassical façade of Museum de Fundatie will take on a completely new look. Using moving projections, artist Miguel Chevalier will bring the building in Zwolle to life. The building’s classical columns and forms provide the canvas for a play of moving images. The façade is thus transformed into a vibrant surface on which ever-changing digital compositions appear.

The work consists of graphic patterns that allude to the digital world and images composed of simple geometric shapes. Together, these simple, universal elements form the building blocks of our contemporary digital reality.

The images change every minute. They form vast waves of light and colour that move across the entire façade. The patterns undulate, shift and change constantly. This creates compositions in which order and chaos converge.

With Pixel Waves, Chevalier gives classical architecture a new meaning. The façade is transformed into a digital and sensory experience that encourages the viewer to look at the building in a different way. The work utilises the principle of trompe-l’œil* whilst, at the same time, subtly challenging the viewer’s perception.

The building thus takes on a new, ever-changing appearance. Pixel Waves invites visitors to enjoy a unique experience, in which historical heritage and the visual language of the 21st century converge.

Pixel Waves has been specially developed to complement the exhibition Digital by Nature at Museum de Fundatie. The project brings the exhibition’s content outdoors, into the public space. At the same time, it enters into a direct dialogue with the museum’s architecture.

Trompe-l’œil: a French term meaning ‘to deceive the eye’. It is an artistic technique in which images are rendered so realistically that they appear to be real or to exist in a three-dimensional space.
