Seeing more clearly through art

training for healthcare professionals

As a doctor, you sometimes have to make diagnoses in a short space of time. How, then, do you avoid making (too) hasty assumptions and conclusions? Looking at art can help with this. Through careful methods of art appreciation and observation exercises, you can train yourself to maintain an open mind, enabling you to look beyond your own assumptions. In small groups, you’ll learn to observe without judgement, ask precise questions, listen attentively and express yourself clearly. You’ll discover how you yourself look at things and how others do. This leads to surprising insights – about art and about yourself.

During this special museum visit, we’ll be using, amongst other things, the proven Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) method, an exploratory group discussion developed by cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen.

No prior knowledge of art is required. It’s all about looking, listening and learning together. This sharpens your powers of observation and teaches you to look more consciously – something that will come in handy every day in your work in the care sector.

The training starts at 9:30 and the entrance is at the rear of the museum, via Potgietersingel in Zwolle.

Target audience: healthcare professionals (doctors, medical specialists, physician assistants, practice support staff, nurses, paramedics, psychologists and others).
