Who creates the work?

A conversation about AI and art with Nina Knaack

How does it affect the way you look at a work of art when you know it was created using AI? During this afternoon session, from 14:00 to 16:00, art historian Nina Knaack will be talking to visitors about the influence of AI on art. Miguel Chevalier’s exhibition Digital by Nature serves as the starting point.

Chevalier creates digital worlds in which forms emerge and change, sometimes in response to your movements. The exhibition also features works created with the aid of AI. They prompt us to reflect on the artist’s choices and the meaning we ascribe to an image. Where do we recognise an artist’s distinctive style when software helps shape the work?

As a contemporary art historian, Nina Knaack explores how artists engage with new technologies. In doing so, she links developments in digital art to questions that have long preoccupied artists, such as originality and the role of the creator.

During this afternoon’s session, your questions and ideas will help shape the direction of the discussion. Whether you use AI yourself or simply want to understand how art is changing, you’re welcome to join the conversation. There’s room for both enthusiasm and scepticism, and for the different ways in which we view the same work.
