Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance is a hallucinatory visual and auditory experience about our urbanised world. The slowing down and speeding up of the images and music have a hypnotic effect. There is no spoken dialogue in this 1982 documentary. In the language of the Hopi Indians, ‘koyaanisqatsi’ means ‘life in madness, life in turmoil, life out of balance’.
The film is the first in the Qatsi trilogy, which explores the various aspects of the relationship between humankind, nature and technology. Koyaanisqatsi is the best-known film in the trilogy and is regarded as a cult film.
