For more than two thousand years, trees lay buried beneath peat in Overijssel. In Veeneiken II, Wilma Wilbrink presents work made from these ancient oaks. They form the starting point for sculptural work in which natural history and contemporary climate issues come together.
Work on the Overijssel Landscape
With her work, Wilbrink refers to possible future water levels. She lets the bog oak act as a silent witness to human intervention and changes in the landscape. The growth rings tell of growth, drought and water, while a ladder makes the fragile balance between people and nature visible.
In this exhibition, her work enters into dialogue with landscapes from the Fundatie Collection by artists including Emmy Bergsma, Paul Bodifee, Jeroen Krabbé and Jan Voerman. Each of these works tells a different story about the Overijssel landscape and the changes it is undergoing.
