Art in the Atrium

made for the place

Every year, under the banner of Art in the Atrium, Museum de Fundatie commissions a mid-career artist to create a new work specifically for the museum’s Vide space in Zwolle.

The open space featuring the glass elevator that connects the museum’s floors is ideal for welcoming visitors with art, introducing them to exciting new forms of art, and sparking their curiosity about the rest of the museum. The artists for the next three years have already been selected: Chourouk Hriech (2025), Diana Scherer (2026), and Antonio Jose Guzman (2027).

Art in the Atrium is a prestigious series; we commit an artist to our museum for a full year. Because the selected artists respond to the space with their work, their pieces take on a different significance. This is quite different from hanging a painting in a so-called “white cube.”

The artists may utilize both the atrium—via a specially developed hoisting system from which a framework capable of supporting art is suspended—and the walls in the first-floor gallery. The series enlivens the museum’s entrance area and contributes to the concept of the museum as a meeting place for everyone. Moreover, the specific space challenges the artists to create works that also utilize the vertical space.
