In Echoes of Ancestors Flores Pescorán depicts a magical family meal with her grandparents. Through a compelling selection of drawings, videos, poetry, and textile installations, the exhibition invites the public into a space that intertwines the past with the present through a dialogue between different generations of Flores Pescorán’s family. Echoes of Ancestors is the first solo museum exhibition by Cristina Flores Pescorán (b. 1986, Peru) in the Netherlands.
Echoes of Ancestors is a deeply personal journey that connects family heritage and history with traditions. Through a compelling selection of drawings, videos, poetry, and textile installations, the exhibition invites the public into a space that intertwines the past with the present through a dialogue between different generations of Flores Pescorán’s family.
In the exhibition, Flores Pescorán depicts a magical family meal with her grandparents. This work brings together questions and experiences related to migration, connection to the environment, and her health. Flores Pescorán’s presentation is inspired by ancient divination practices from the Mochica culture in northern Peru, dating from 200 to 850 CE, where she is from. Plants and seeds play a significant role in the divination practices of the Mochica culture. In this tapestry of memory and healing, Flores Pescorán incorporates Moche beans (pallares) and indigenous cotton, as well as soursop (guanabana) leaves—all important cultural symbols in the Mochica culture. Moche beans (pallares) are essential in northern Peruvian cuisine and are used in divination and healing rituals. Indigenous cotton, known as the finest and most durable, is called the Silk of South America or the White Gold of Peru. Native to northern Peru, it is environmentally friendly and has traditionally been used for textiles, rituals, and folk medicine. Soursop, a fruit native to North and South America, is known for its medicinal benefits and is often promoted as a potential cancer treatment.
Curing cancer with cotton, dancing with soursop leaves, and reading pallares at the table will all be part of this magical family meal.
