Museum de Fundatie presents the first solo museum exhibition in the Netherlands of Buhlebezwe Siwani. She explores the way in which the Black female body is framed within a male-dominated society. The Black female experience within the context of South Africa is also central to her work. Siwani works with performance, photography, sculpture and installations. Her projects often explore the connection between ancestral rituals and modern life.
Between life and death
Buhlebezwe Siwani is a sangoma, a spiritual healer who works in the space between life and death. Her work therefore focuses on rituals and on the relationship between Christianity and African spirituality. In doing so, she raises social and political questions. Siwani always draws on her own life story and experiences.
This exhibition is part of the programme line Fundatie Forward, a series of first solo museum exhibitions by contemporary makers who live and work, at least partly, in the Netherlands. With this series, Museum de Fundatie aims to set something in motion and offer these makers a platform.
